What Should You Say During a Job Interview? Tips for Your Next Interview

You’ve done the work applying to jobs, you’ve waited weeks to hear back, but the day has finally come when you’ve been asked to interview for your desired position. Before you start imagining working there too much, you have to remember that the job interview can make or break your chance at landing that dream position. During my time on Wall Street, I’ve had the opportunity to see both sides of the interview process as the interviewee and the interviewer. Below are some job interview tips.

  1. It’s Not About You  

One of the biggest misunderstandings that people, young and old face during the interview is what type of message to relay to the interviewer. While it may seem that your goal should be to impress the interviewer with how nice, smart, and accomplished you are, this will not land you the job. What you need to convey to the interviewer is that you are the best person available to make the company more successful. A job interview is not about solving your job problem but solving the needs of the company you are interviewing for.  

  1. How to Sell Yourself –Punchy Vignettes  

It doesn’t matter how outstanding your product is, if you can’t find a way to convince people to buy that product- it’s like a tree falling in the forest-no one will hear it, therefore, no one will care. Your job in the interview is to convince the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the position. First, think about what you believe to be your greatest strengths. Secondly, think about how these skills can be matched to the job you are seeking. Thirdly, compose brief but punchy vignettes (no longer than a minute) about how these strengths can help you do the job. Also, prepare for famous questions like, "Why should we hire you?"

  1. Be Excited  

Most people are scared when they interview, and because of this, they tend to downplay their excitement about the position they are interviewing for. It is almost impossible to get an interviewer to hire you if you don’t show genuine interest or excitement about the industry, company, and job you are here for.  One of the best ways to show excitement is through experience. If you had an internship that relates to the industry, use this to show your excitement.
