Students Tap Alumni in Job Search

Posted by LearnEarnRetire on Thu, May 19, 2016 @ 09:00 AM

There is an increasing trend for college students to tap Alumni in the job and intern search process, and for good reason. It is highly effective.

NACE (the National Association of Colleges and Employers) just released data that nearly 70% of recent graduates say they reached out to alumni during job search.  This is up from 60% just a few years ago.

Moreover, just over 59% of these respondents rate the effectiveness of engaging alumni as ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ effective.  You need to put the power of alumni to work for you.  These numbers say that they can, and are willing to help you.

I suspect that the rise in alumni engagement is in direct correlation to LinkedIn’s University Pages.  It is easy to engage alumni from informational interviews to job searches.  Becoming proficient at it is becoming essential.

Here is a link to information on how to do it, from a seven part series I wrote a while ago about informational interviews.  If you want to read that whole series it begins here.

You cannot afford to limit yourself to companies that come on campus to recruit.  You must engage in an effective virtual search to expand your horizons.

 Good luck.
